Let’s be real, reading the bible can be a bit like exercise, you don’t know how much you want or need it until you’re actually doing it.
Over the last few years, my bible intake has been less than ideal so this year I have been making it a priority to get back into it.
Sitting down with your bible can be overwhelming. Because it’s so big it can be hard to know where to start. Here are six different ways to get your head in the bible every day.
1. Follow a daily bible readings plan
Find a bible readings plan that takes you through the whole bible in a year. Here’s where I plug my brother’s app, Dailys. I’m obsessed, you can even change your colour theme 🙂 Unfortunately it’s only available for iPhones at the moment but if you have an android phone then Daily Bible Reading is another option.
2. Quiz yourself
Bible Quiz – Know Questions – This app will also take you through a daily bible reading plan but at the end of each day there is a quiz to test your memory. It’s easy to read the daily readings without properly taking it in so this app can help you remember the details from what you’ve just read.
These first two options are fun to do with family or friends so that you can discuss what you’ve read and do the quiz together.
3. Listen to an audio bible
If you’re not a reader, there’s plenty of apps that can read the bible to you. This is how they took in the word back in the day (see Nehemiah 8:1-3). They would listen to the laws being read for hours on end.
4. Listen to bible talks/podcasts
I often walk to work and I love listening to a bible study when I’m walking. I feel much more motivated for my work day when I do this. If you have a long commute in the car or on the train, this is a great time to get some spiritual encouragement.
5. Study with friends
Start up a study group with your friends where you assign each other different topics to study. Set a deadline and after the deadline, come back and share what you have learnt with your group. A few of my friends and I have been doing this for a couple of years now and it is so fun! I have studied topics that I never would have chosen otherwise (everything from bears to periods) and have learnt so much.
6. Follow people who inspire you
There are so many great blogs and instagram accounts to follow for daily encouragement. A couple of my favourites are:
If you have any other ways you like to get your daily intake of the Word, share them in the comments below!
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” ~Deuteronomy 6:6–9
